Accelerated Nursing

The purpose of this course is to introduce fundamental nursing skills and the application of the nursing process in the provision of safe, competent, and evidence-based nursing care. Emphasis is placed on health promotion across the lifespan. Professionalism, standards of practice, ethics, nursing theory, communication, and the evolving roles and responsibilities of the professional nurse are examined and applied to clinical practice, including the development of patient-centered plans of care and effective communication within interprofessional teams and therapeutic nurse–client relationships. Nursing skills are developed in the laboratory setting and implemented under supervision in community-based clinical environments.

The Nursing Health Assessment and Promotion course prepares students to perform comprehensive health histories, conduct physical examinations, and engage in systematic data collection while applying evidence-based health promotion strategies across the lifespan. Emphasizing a holistic approach to care, the course integrates communication techniques, along with developmental and cultural considerations, to support clinical decision-making essential for professional nursing practice. It combines theoretical foundations with clinical laboratory experiences, allowing students to apply evidence-based practices in diverse healthcare settings and develop safe, competent, and patient-centered nursing care. An additional fee is required for this course

This course focuses on resiliency-building skills to enhance the individual's capacity to navigate adversity and challenges. The concept of resiliency as the cultivation of intentional wellness skills is explored, with a special focus placed on personal reflection, evaluation, and application of these principles. Foundational aspects of building self-awareness, self-regulation, optimism, mental agility, strength of character, and connection are examined.

Designed for students in nursing and other health professions, this course explores nutrition from a lifespan and population health perspective. Students examine major nutrient classes and their functions, the role of nutrition in health, disease prevention, therapeutic care, diet–drug interactions, and nutritional interventions for select conditions and diseases. Emphasis is placed on applying nutritional knowledge to personal, individual, and population health, including diverse and vulnerable populations. Community, national, and global nutrition challenges are also addressed, highlighting social, political, economic, and environmental influences on health outcomes.

Introduces students to family health nursing theory and practice with an emphasis on the childbearing family and the well-child. Nursing care is examined across the reproductive continuum, including preconception, conception, pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, with additional focus on care of the newborn and well-child pediatric populations. Using a family-centered, developmental framework, the course incorporates culturally responsive care and a population health perspective. Concepts of family structure, function, values, culture, and spirituality are applied to health promotion and health maintenance for the childbearing family

This course provides the foundation for medical-surgical nursing practice. Students apply the nursing process to manage pathophysiological problems across the lifespan in individuals with acute and chronic conditions. Emphasis is placed on comprehensive assessment of physiological, psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual factors, including palliative and end-of-life care. A weekly 2-hour and 50-minute laboratory experience allows students to apply theoretical knowledge and develop essential nursing skills required for 300-level coursework. Learning focuses on core scientific principles underlying clinical skills, preparing students to provide safe, effective care across diverse healthcare settings. Communication, teamwork, prioritization, quality improvement, skill demonstration, critical thinking, and patient safety are reinforced through simulation.

Advanced and Intensive Writing. This course provides a comprehensive foundation in evidence-based practice (EBP) and research principles essential for professional nursing and healthcare practice. Emphasis is placed on the integration of the best available evidence, clinical expertise, and patient values to inform decision-making and improve patient outcomes. Students will develop the skills necessary to formulate clinical questions, systematically search for and retrieve relevant literature, and critically appraise research evidence for validity, reliability, and applicability. Learners will engage in the evaluation and synthesis of evidence to support changes in clinical practice and will be introduced to strategies for translating research findings into practice across diverse healthcare settings. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to critically evaluate research, apply evidence to clinical decision-making, and contribute to a culture of inquiry and continuous improvement in healthcare.

The pathophysiological and clinical manifestations of various diseases are explained in terms of body systems. The course examines the interrelationships among genetic, genomic, physiological, psychosocial, spiritual, environmental, and cultural factors that contribute to disease morbidity and mortality, as well as the integration of health promotion and disease prevention. Introductory evidence-based pharmacological principles are studied to understand how drugs affect humans across the lifespan. This course integrates the nursing process to promote clinical judgment when using drug therapy to provide safe and individualized client care. Drug classifications, therapeutic effects, adverse reactions, and potential toxicities are analyzed in relation to the pathophysiological processes.

This course explores the relationship between management and leadership processes and practice as well as the issues which impact the delivery of health care. The student will consider and practice the skills needed by nurse managers and leaders to effectively assess, plan, design, staff, coordinate, direct, and evaluate the delivery of safe, quality patient centered health care.

This course is the clinical experience accompanying NU 404: Illness Across the Lifespan II. This course advances the student learning in the area of medical-surgical nursing and builds upon the clinical experience of NU 305 to provide patient-centered care with an emphasis on the dignity and uniqueness of every person as a holistic being. Utilizing the nursing process to examine the human response to illness and integrate the principles of health promotion and disease prevention, the student will care for clients with complex health conditions in a variety of settings. The concepts of critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making, and priority setting are emphasized utilizing the nursing process as the foundation for the provision of safe, individualized care. Collaboration, communication, delegation, and patient teaching are incorporated into the holistic care of the client and family. The student will integrate the principles of excellent communication, evidence-based practice, quality improvement and safety while providing care as a member of the interdisciplinary team.

This course prepares students to apply previously acquired nursing knowledge to the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations within public and community health settings. Public health nursing is examined as an integration of health promotion, disease prevention, health education, and population-based interventions. Epidemiology and population health data are introduced as unifying frameworks for understanding community health needs and guiding evidence-based public health programs and services across the continuum of public health practice. Students develop beginning skills in community assessment and use data to inform planning, implementation, and evaluation of interventions. Collaborative care models involving interprofessional partners and public health agencies are examined as strategies to support disease prevention, health promotion, and health protection across population health settings. The impact of social, economic, and environmental determinants on the health of individuals, families, and populations is examined. Themes of social justice, health equity, and care for vulnerable and marginalized populations are integrated throughout the course. Students also develop nurse leadership competencies and examine the role of the nurse as an advocate in health policy and systems-level change to improve population health outcomes.

The Capstone Clinical and Seminar are designed to assist students in integrating the competencies essential for the transition into professional nursing practice. During the semester, the student will progress from a structured, supervised framework of practice to a general framework of supervision from the faculty and agency preceptors. The clinical site will be dependent upon the student's needs based upon the joint analysis of the student and faculty prior to the placement.

This course is designed to support students in preparing for the NCLEX-RN exam and to offers a comprehensive review of nursing content. Students will be responsible for creating and completing their personal NCLEX-RN study plan. Students will be responsible for creating and completing their personal NCLEX-RN study plan. The course will utilize online computerized tools, information from various published NCLEX review materials, and assessment exams to track and evaluate progress towards NCLEX-RN readiness.
