This course covers the clinical application of pharmacology and pharmacotherapeutics for common acute and chronic diseases seen in primary and acute care settings. It builds on students' existing knowledge of pharmacology and medication administration. The focus includes basic drug classifications and principles of pharmacology, with particular emphasis on the nursing role in developing a comprehensive approach to drug therapy through the nursing process, with the aim of improving clinical judgment. Drugs are reviewed by their classification, mechanism of action, adverse effects, nursing considerations during administration, and potential toxicities to prepare students for the NCLEX-RN exam. Dosage calculations will also be reviewed and assessed for competency. The goal is to enable learners to apply pharmacological principles and knowledge using various teaching methods such as case studies, review questions, and gamification.
